Artificial Intelligence

  • Algorithms are increasingly being deployed across society. In many situations, their usage is relatively straightforward. But when they’re used for civic and social decisions that impact people’s lives, things become much more complicated. By giving participants the opportunity to create their own group algorithms and reflect on the impacts those algorithms have, this group activity shows the ways that algorithms used in social spaces can exclude and prioritize certain people.

    Timing: 90 minutes

Audience: Open to audiences of all levels

Keywords: AI, civic society, algorithms, automated decision-making

  • APGT’s AI & Speculative Fiction workshop takes a sci-fi approach to understanding AI and its growing impact on society. The workshop explores the forms AI takes today and the role AI-based technologies can play in shaping the future. Through collective storytelling, participants will be guided through building their own creative imaginings that tease out what the problems and potentials of AI can be.

    Timing: 90 minutes

Audience: Open to audiences of all levels

Keywords: AI, collective story-telling, sci-fi, speculative fiction

  • Text-to-image models, voice recommendation systems, and chat assistants. It seems like machine learning is everywhere, but what does it mean for a machine to learn, and what problems are being solved? In this workshop, learners will walk away with a deeper understanding of the different types and applications of machine learning models that are becoming ubiquitous in our everyday lives.

    Timing: 90 minutes

Audience: We recommend that participants take our Algorithms and Social Spaces workshop before this one, or have a loose understanding of what an algorithm is.

Keywords: AI, supervised machine learning, unsupervised machine learning, ChatGPT

Understanding Digital Systems

  • How do we navigate the complicated and oppressive digital systems that permeate our lives? In this workshop, participants will learn about strategies employed by groups in Indonesia, Jamaica, Pakistan, and Uganda to combat and transform digital ID systems in their regions. Using a fantastical Beast as a metaphor for oppressive digital systems, participants will take stock of their own resources and map out tactics and strategies for building the foundation of their own grassroots organizing plan.

    Timing: 120 minutes

Audience: Those interested in grassroots organizing strategies.

Keywords: Digital ID, organizing strategies and tactics, digital systems, strategy, grassroots organizing plan

This workshop was created through a collaboration with The Engine Room, a non-profit organization that helps activists, organizations, and other social change agents make the most of data and technology.

Tech Futures

  • What does it take to dramatically rethink the forms that our technologies of today and tomorrow can take? Can we do this without being limited by blind spots or tangled in cynicism and dystopia?

Based on the idea that truly revolutionary technology must be based on values that treat humans, materials, and ecosystems as part of an interconnected whole, this workshop introduces and uses APGT’s Five Technological Truths to guide a process of thinking imaginatively about technology. Participants will leave not just with new approaches for reconsidering technology, but with a sharpened sense that when it comes to our technological futures, nothing is inevitable or foretold.

    Timing: 120 minutes

    Audience: Open to all

    Keywords: future-facing, imaginative, creativity, technology
